Nandamuri Balakrishna has been on a solid run since Akhanda, consistently serving up mass entertainers that click with fans and even pull in the younger crowd. With Daaku Maharaaj, expectations were naturally sky-high. After all, it teams him up with director Bobby, who previously delivered a hit with Chiranjeevi. The trailer promised a sleek, high-octane ride—and for a while, the film delivers just that. The first half is where Daaku Maharaaj really shines. Balayya looks super stylish, and Vijay Karthik’s cinematography gives the film a gritty, almost Hollywood-like vibe. Bobby’s slick direction and fast-paced storytelling keep things interesting, even though the kid-sentiment subplot feels a bit recycled—especially if you’ve seen Bhagavat Kesari. Still, the mystery around Balakrishna’s protective role adds some intrigue, and the little girl at the heart of the story puts in a genuinely impressive performance. Urvashi Rautela’s role doesn’t add much to the plot, but her glam factor serves its purpose. The “Dabidi Dibidi” number is pure fan service—and it works. Interestingly, the actual female leads show up only in the second half, which is a bit unconventional. The interval bang introduces Bobby Deol as the villain, and that moment does hit the mark. Then comes the second half—and that’s where things start to slide. The oppressed-people-vs-evil-system theme has been done to death in films like Khaleja, KGF, and Saripodhaa Sanivaaram. Add in the drug-smuggling backdrop, and it starts to feel like a mashup of Vikram and Leo without much originality. Among the female leads, Shraddha Srinath gets the better deal, but her sudden emotional bond with Balakrishna feels unearned. Pragya Jaiswal barely gets any substance. Bobby Deol, despite his menacing presence, doesn’t quite land as a powerful antagonist—his scenes with Balayya lack the punch you'd expect. Even the transformation of Balayya into the Daaku persona feels rushed and inconsistent. The rugged look with the bull beard is cool, but the clean-shaven version as an engineer just doesn’t match the high-voltage action scenes. Some of the elevation scenes—like followers bowing before him—come off as overly dramatic and old-school. The supporting cast does what they can, but most of them don’t have much to work with—they’re mostly just filling space. On the technical front, Thaman’s background score is a definite winner. The Daaku theme is powerful and at times feels like something straight out of Anirudh’s playbook, which isn’t a bad thing. It really helps lift some key moments. Vijay Karthik’s visuals also deserve a shoutout—his camerawork, much like in Jailer, adds a distinct visual punch that makes the film look polished, especially in the first half. In the end, Bobby does succeed in giving Balakrishna a fresh, Gen Z-friendly makeover with sharp visuals and mass-pleasing moments. But the film’s core story is too familiar to leave a lasting impression. Verdict: Watch Daaku Maharaaj for Balayya’s new avatar, the sleek visuals, and the high-energy moments—but don’t expect anything groundbreaking in terms of story.
